A Smattering Of Christmas

Well, it's 3:37 p.m. on Christmas Day and I am still trying to recover from this morning. For one thing, I am sick with the flu which is causing me to be a pretty irritable ... but gifts and family and good food are attempting to quell that moodiness so we'll see where I end up by the end of the night!

As for gifts, I got quite the haul. I have a few shots here of some select items. I didn't photograph everything, especially not clothes because a) I am not yet in the mood to model, and b) if I just photographed them lying there, that wouldn't be much fun. So those photos will come later, but for now, here are some choice items ...

New DKNY purse. I needed a new everyday bag and I love how classic and simple this is. It'll look great with cigarette pants, a striped top and flats.

Two new watches. The bottom one is a replacement for the one I got last year, the "8" fell off the face. Luckily these are cheapies.

Two Audrey books to add to my ever-growing collection.

Cranium! I have wanted to get a new board game to play when I'm, well, bored, and this one seemed the most appealing. I think we're going to play after Christmas dinner tonight.

Newest Obsession: Michelle Harper

I was recently watching a re-run of Fashion Television and was introduced to the absolutely lovely Michelle Harper. Her whole aesthetic is right up my alley, mixing old Hollywood glam with an artsy surrealist vibe and haute couture pieces all with a very fun, easygoing attitude. I'm totally style- and beauty-crushing on her, with those bow lips, big eyes, and high cheekbones, she looks like a porcelain doll. What I would give to raid her closet! Here's an interesting write-up about her. And perhaps her tumblr could offer some fashion insight?

So this leads me to ask, who are you currently crushing on, style-wise? Or you could tell me who you're crushing on romantically, I don't mind!

As for what's going on in my life? I'm busy with xoJane, Rookie Mag, my tumblr for this blog, getting ready to move and go to school, trying to maintain a social life in between all of that, and feeling excitement about the holidays! Fun, fun, fun.

Halloween and what not ...

Yes, finally doing a little update about my Halloween costume. I struggled quite a bit trying to decide what to dress up as, but ended up going with a swan which was actually a part of my Halloween costume guide from last year.

The wings were store bought, the headband was from the dollar store and then I glued feathers to it myself, my dress was BCBG and my necklace was vintage given to me by my grandmother. That was Saturday. When it came around to actual Halloween and handing out candy to the kiddies, I didn't feel like doing the make-up again so I just re-purposed the wings and gave myself a braided "halo" and went as an angel. It was fun, I just played spooky music out of a boombox and got to see tons of cute little babies saying "twick o' tweet!" So cute. We had so much candy, and I made sure to put aside some for myself, but it's all gone now. BUMMER!

Also, this weekend on the Friday I went to a 1920's Murder Mystery Masquerade. It was pretty fun, mostly to see so many people decked out in their Prohibition-era finest, and they had a 3-piece jazz band and professional Charleston dancers to show everyone how it's done. Originally I was going to wear a black fringed dress (so cliché, right?) but it ended up not fitting so I went with the BCBG dress from Halloween, underneath a turquoise floral chiffon dress worn as a sort of robe. I guess my outfit theme was "20's-era hooker, the morning after", ha. I was running on little time getting ready so my hair and make-up were a damn mess, but whatever, I had FUN!

See what I mean about my hair being whacked out? What is going ON with that?

Oh, by the way, I met Jeffrey Eugenides last week. (!!!)

So basically, life is good. And now I'm just getting very excited for the holidays ... what about you?

As someone who has been using Mac computers since I was 5 years old, someone who saved up money from my first real job to buy an iPod (a big honker of a Nano with a black and white screen, one that lasted 5 years and was still running when I replaced it with another iPod in 2010), someone who makes a living working from an iMac -- I am so deeply saddened by this world's loss today of Steve Jobs.

Growing up, my dad revered Steve, talked about Steve like he was my distant, genius uncle. I grew up admiring him and his creations, things that have made my life simpler, happier, more connected. He is an icon to this generation, and will be to the generations to come.

I hope you're at peace now Steve, and free of the pain that cancer causes. Let's remember him for the good and try our best to keep up the fight against this awful disease. I've lost too many good people in recent times to it, and everyone in this world is affected by cancer in some way.

So let's be grateful to have shared a world with someone so incredible, be grateful for our health, our happiness, and our loved ones.

*Okay, not my actual third birthday, but this blog's third birthday. My actual birthday is on the 30th and I will not be turning 3.

Well, happy birthday, an Aesthetic Feast! It's been a fun three years. I hope to keep improving and changing, all while staying true to my inner weirdo.

On another note, it's cold out. It was so hot last Wednesday and then the temperature took an absolute nosedive. Today is was dreary and grey, raining and foggy. I must admit I do have a bit of a soft spot for days like this, and my heart would be even softer if I could spend them on the shore of a beach, disappearing in the fog and looking like a hibernating bear in thick knit sweaters.

Toast's Fall product images just get me, they really get me ...

Now I need to go about turning the indoor heating back on, thrifting a bunch of chunky sweaters, stocking up on apple cider and re-watching Never Let Me Go to get me in that dreary Fall mood (paging Kater!). And it's going to be time to break out the Hunters soon. Hm, and I'm well aware that come January I'm going to be absolutely miserable with the cold weather but for now, HOW EXCITING!

Hello everyone. I've had a very odd last few weeks, to say the least. A lot of negatives, a lot of positives, and everything is sort of starting to balance and peter off at last, I think, at least as best as it can considering the way my life goes ...

Anyway, I'm back from a quick little jaunt to New York to cover Fashion Week for xoJane, which was much too short but it was lovely to see everyone. I work with some amazing people, and everyday I am so grateful to work for one of my lady-heroes, Jane Pratt, who is just so incredibly warm and inspiring and giving and I am consistently in awe of the opportunities I have been given this year.

I also finally got to meet Ms. Tavi Gevinson, which was wonderful since we've been corresponding only via e-mail for so long and working together, and I've been so thrilled to give my little bit to Rookie so far and happy to see it turning out so well, and so quickly embraced by girls and boys of all ages, all types, all over. It's just great to be working with such smart, genuine people across the board. I'm a blessed person.

It was also nice to finally meet Kristina of The Rebel Waltz & Twee Valley High, and Nicolette of Nicolette Mason. Talented and lovely girls who I have "known" so long via that wonderful bit of technology that is LiveJournal and it's just such a treat to meet people in person after so long, and see that they're real and lovelier than you'd ever imagine.

Oh gosh, you're probably getting a stomach ache from how sickly sweet this all is, but sometimes I just have to write down all of the things I am grateful for, because it's so easy to forget. So so easy, and I never want to forget.

Anyway, I have many photos to go through but I thought I'd post a quick few and just update everyone on what's been going on. I still have that "program this blog" thing running and I will get to it, sooner than later I hope.

I've completely forgotten where I took this photo from but here I am, my beaded collar askew, on the night of the Advanced Style party at the Ace Hotel.

A photo of my outfit that night. Everything is vintage. The dress was wool which was a poor choice because it was so hot but oh well, I guess I succumbed to fashion over comfort at that point.

Again, thank you for reading. It's funny to be here with this blog now for three years going, a blog I thought initially was just going to be a food blog, and now I just talk about anything and people read it and communicate with me, and it's just a really great little world I've stumbled into. So thank you to everyone who's been reading from the start! You're great.

Hello everyone! I bet you thought I died, didn't you? Well, I didn't. I've just been so busy with writing for xoJane, working, and trying not to die from this horrific Summer heat.

Well, here are a few updates. 1 - I dyed my hair red. (And you can read all about it right here.)

2 - I've been writing lots of beauty stories. Such as how to get the easiest Summer hairstyle ever, tips on copying Emma Stone's hair and make-up, make-up that will give you an ethereal glow, and how to soothe sunburned skin. Along with how to do winged cat-eye style eyeliner, which people have been asking me to do for awhile. Enjoy!

3 - I bought classic (never-worn!) high-waisted bright green Wrangler jeans for $15 (And then found the same pair on Etsy for $90!)

4 - And I've been eating a lot of delicious food ...

I've always been in love with vintage make-up packaging and advertisements. I'd love a little paintbox like that today! It reminds me of a lip palette my mom had in the early 90s that I used to play with growing up. Maybe a child playing with make-up is a bad idea but the obsession has proved fruitful, I think.

Now isn't this an interesting photo. Look at those charms! Imagine how heavy (and noisy) that bracelet must have been. The colours in here are interesting too. Pale baby pink, turquoise, orange red. All great for Spring. I don't think I'd ever wear my nails that long though, or paint a face in the palm of my hand. Creepy, sort of.

Oh my gosh, these geometric blouses are killing me. And the models too. Doesn't the girl on the left look a bit like Freja? And the one on the right is reminding me so much of Anna Karina in Une Femme est Une Femme, if only her purple shadow were blue!

While the white tights for bottoms aren't particularly blowing my mind, I love these blouses. If I had them I'd wear them tucked in a bright flared mini or with some slim cigarette pants. Ah, gimme.

Happy Easter everyone! I hope you're eating lots of chocolate and sugar and all of that icky but wonderful stuff. I feel like I'm getting sick, my neck is all swollen at the sides so despite the deliciousness of Hershey's Eggies (a ripoff of Cadbury Mini Eggs), I'm a bit miserable. The weather was pretty nice today so I decided to put on my Sprint-iest ensemble in one of my favourite colours and take some outdoor photos.

A Bit O' New York

Ever since I got home from New York, which was on March 31st to be exact, I have been endlessly busy. With the play, with trying to write, with everything ... I haven't had any time for little personal projects and thus, the updates on this blog have suffered. My apol

ogies. You know I love you, faithful readers.

I just want to say, I get e-mails every once and awhile from those of you who read this blog, just random messages of kindness, and I truly appreciate it. I don't always get around to replying to each one, but I read every one and really am grateful for it. So thank you to everyone who reads

this blog and gets in contact with me. It means a lot, especially when I'm in such a harried state!

For the time being I have a few photos to share, just from the night my friends and I spent at the Chelsea. Those of you who have stayed there or visited can just scroll on by, since there's nothing TOO exciting here, but anyway ...

I love horses so I was particularly enamoured with this painting in the lobby. I want it on my wall!

My red-tights'ed feet and our fireplace that I almost climbed inside of but decided against for fear of spiders/cobwebs.

The hotel's own line of toiletries. Seeing as my sensitive skin was freaking out from pre-trip stress-hives, the body lotion was a total relief. The products were surprisingly nice for a hotel line. I'm so used to chalky soaps and non-lathering shampoos ... then again I don't really stay in the nicest hotels ...

Of course, I had to get a shot of El Cohen's placard.

Okay, so we were on the 9th floor. I have the worst vertigo. Taking this shot nearly made me throw up, my head was spinning. I get anxious just looking at it but I'm glad I overcame my fears for a few seconds to get it!

Coca-Cola Craziness = Polyvore Weirdness

I am way too sensitive when it comes to caffeine. I drink Coca-Cola and get shaky and can't get to sleep, no matter how tired I am. I also go on bizarre-o Polyvore sprees, making outfits out of clothes I'll never own because I am broke as a joke.

An Annie Hall kind of thing, if Annie would embrace a more tropical palette.

I realize I haven't updated in a long time, and that's 'cause I've been super busy. I guess the biggest bit of news is that I've been hired on as Associate Beauty Editor for the forthcoming JanePratt.com. This is madness! Wonderful amazing mad news. (For those of you who have sent me beauty questions over the years, they may finally be answered!) Jane Pratt is a personal hero of mine, and to many of you as well, probably! The site is going to be incredible and I can't wait for you all to see it when it launches. Bookmark it, and in the time being, "Like" it on Facebook!

I'm also in a play right now with a pretty big part. It's so exciting for me, my first venture into theatre, and my co-stars couldn't be more lovely.

On top of that, I'm headed to NYC yet again (not that I'm complaining, I'm thrilled!) next week. It's going to be a blast full of lots and lots of delicious food, and of course I will take plenty of photos.

I love Toast. Their catalogs and lookbooks are always so well-styled and cozy looking. I am so ready for sun-dappled streets, green leaves on the trees, and a much-needed trip to the beach. Damn you, Winter. Damn you!

And so, awards season is upon us. As a movie lover, it's an exciting time to celebrate the best films of the last year and to boo and hiss when films I dislike are awarded with various accolades, all to my dismay. It's also a time to be glued to the TV, scrutinizing the fashion choices of the starlets who have been so lucky as to have a chance to walk the red carpet.

I'm sure we've all been there, muttering, "what was she thinking?!" or "I never would have worn that!" and it gets you thinking, what would you wear were you given the chance to go to the Globes, the BAFTAs, the SAG awards or the Oscars ...

As someone who'd like to have a career in the film industry someday, this consumes me like you wouldn't believe. In a fun, totally non-obsessive way, I swear.

Over the years I've honed my tastes and I think I know what I'd go for. So this is what this post is all about. A visual daydream predicting my eventual waltz down the red carpet. Bear with me, after all it is nearly 5 am ...

In terms of dresses, I've never been a fan of the ballgown, princess-esque silhouette. I like sleek lines and an old Hollywood feel. Details are important. Sequins, beading, and/or a mix of textures are all A+ in my book. I've actually been in love with the far-right Viktor & Rolf dress for quite a few years now, and why it may not be the most Oscar-esque dress out there (I'm sure Joan Rivers would scream at it), I feel like it is completely my style and so dreamy and glamorous, how could you resist it? All that slinky beading that probably whooshes around with every step you take. Though I'd probably wear a bra with it ...

And how dreamy is the first Armani gown? I love a silver screen era plunging neckline.

And while none of these images show it, the number one thing I'd look for in an awards show dress would be a completely bare back. I think the back is the most beautiful part of the human body and I'd wanna show it off. And I'm telling you this because you care.

Oooh, bright colours. That first Rodarte dress looks like the mad love-child of an Emperor penguin and a toucan thrown into hyper-speed. Do want. And the two Carolina Herrera gowns are very classic but with this artsy New York broad at an art charity thing during the late 50s. Right? Right. That second one, the satiny bursts of primary colours from the back, I cannot stop swooning. Get on me, dress.

Everyone knows hair and make-up are equally as important as the clothes, and I've already got this down. Side part, big waves, and bold lips. Bam, you're done.

Oh those Viktor & Rolf heels. Obsessed for ages. Can you imagine? Charlotte Olympia is also always a dream. I feel like the majority of shoes worn at awards shows are these strappy little sandal type deals that do not appeal to me at all. Weird.

I like those Dior earrings for the little thorns depicted on them along with the rose. How symbolic of Hollywood. I like the Judith Leiber clutches just 'cause they're shiny ...

Thriftin'

Hello all. I had to wake up for work at 5.30 in the morning today, so I figured I'd reward myself after. I didn't have much to spend so I hit the thrift store. I always seem to have good luck on chance visits and today's trip paid off handsomely.

For the last few years I've always looked for "Bobby blouses" at the thrift store. Basically, they're silky dress shirts with bold patterns that I can imagine Bob Dylan would've worn sometime in the sixties. In the Fall, H&M had a cotton shirt, black with pale pink polka dots, but it wasn't slouchy or silky enough so I passed it up, holding out for something better. Well, I found it today. A vintage, 100% silk black shirt with white polka dots, a la Bobby.

I look like a huge dork but I do not care. I am pleased as punch.

Another find. This vintage furry-fuzzy textured coat with quarter-length sleeves. It'll be nice for when Winter starts to mild itself out.

And lastly in the wardrobe department of things, this crushed velvet 1950/60s (I'm guessing from the tags) black cape. I looooove it. My mom kept saying, "turn up the collar, turn up the collar!" which made me feel like an extra on Mad Men if Mad Men had vampires.

I'm not quite sure what this book is. I assumed it was a compilation of articles and what not from the magazine "True Confessions", but I looked it up and it says that launched in 1922, whereas this book says 1919 ... so I'm confused. Plus, the book is mapped out like a magazine and has magazine ads from the time period in it. So who knows! Regardless, it's an awesome little piece of ephemera. I have an addiction to old ads, especially of the hilariously sexist variety. They really put things into perspective, don't you think? See examples below ...

"We are still the weaker sex" (Which basically goes on to say that despite women working along with men during wartime, they are still 'weak' and need to look pretty presentable, and fresh. Gee whiz.)

"Women! Earn Money!" (Women earning money? How shocking!)

"Are You Flat-Chested?" (Then you should probably go home and cry into your jazz records.)

Literally every page is full of ads like this. Funny and disheartening all at once. But you've gotta love the illustrations.

Well, well, I am exhausted. I think it's high time for a nap. I hope you're all well and braving the Winter chill with courage in your heart. See? I am tired. And rambling. Sleep. Now.

Happy holidays everyone! I hope you all had a joyous Christmas and a relaxing day after Christmas (here in Canada, we have Boxing Day, post-Christmas sales). I've just bought my New Year's Eve dress and some other goodies and now I'm off to the movies to see Black Swan with the family.

Ah, it's the holiday season. My favourite time of the year! Yes, I'm that annoying girl who likes when they start playing Christmas carols ad nauseam over the loudspeakers in shopping malls. And I absolutely LOVE buying gifts for my family and friends.

I find the most important thing is to know who the person is. There is nothing better than receiving a gift that just screams "you". It is personal and exciting, and you'll cherish it so much more than a gift certificate or some cash stuffed into a greeting card.

I know there are some people out there who are "gift-challenged", that is, they never know what to get for people. Well, I'm here to rescue you. Hoot Hoot (That's a spooky owl's call)

Happy first day of November, everyone!

Halloween was this weekend and I did it up in style, or at least that was what I tried for! My costume was a WWII nurse with a bit of pin-up thrown in. I wore a Joe Fresh white blouse with a vintage skirt, H&M seamed stockings, Killah shoes, a Kay's Caps authentic nurse's cap, and a cape sewed by my wonderful mother.

And I did my hair with a mix of wire rollers, sponge rollers, and pin curls. It was such a mess before I brushed it out, I looked like little orphan Annie.

My sister went as a Boardwalk Empire-esque 1920s "lady-of-the-night" (prostitute!) The fur coat is mine, vintage from the 1950s.

My good friend Anna, a fiercely Liberal lady, went as a young Republican circa the 80s. Fun fun.

We spent most of our night dining and dancing at Sneaky Dee's. My mouth is still pretty sore from wisdom teeth surgery so I had to be very patient with those nachos, which was a shame because I was so hungry.

I hope you all had a fun, safe, and well-costumed Halloween. Now it's time to think about the holidays!

Costume conundrum?

Halloween is quickly approaching and I know that sometimes, deciding what to be can be a challenge. Especially in a world where costumes are as trendy as the fashion world during the other 364 days of the year. You want to stand out but still look stylish, original, and be comfortable. So, being the fairy godmother that I am (you consider me a fairy godmother, right?!), I've compiled a list of fun, interesting, and most of all unique costumes to help you survive during these last-minute preparations. And not a Lady Gaga or Jersey Shore-ian in sight.

Remember, the product suggestions are just that - suggestions. Everything in here can be culled from your closet or a thrift store if you need to keep a budget in mind.

1. Swan

Ditch the tutu. This is less ballet, more birdlike. Especially fitting if you've been blessed with a long neck.

White feather headpieces - Etsy (1) (2) (3); Numerous results turn up, so it's all just a matter of your budget and style. It would also be quite easy to make one with a trip to the craft store and the use of a glue gun.

Dresses - (4) 'Kelly' dress by Adam, (5) Knotted strapless dress by Mini for Many.

Wings - (6) Can easily be found at any Halloween or costume shop as part of an angel costume.

Eyeliner - (7) Bobbi Brown, (8) Sephora brand. Exaggerated and drawn up from the outer corners, and down into the bridge of the nose to create large, angled eyes.

Lipstick - (9) MAC cosmetics lipstick in 'Morange'. A chic-er version of a beak - paint your lips orange.

Final steps - glitter, white tights, and killer heels.

2. Janet Leigh in Psycho

Funny, gory, and classic. Best if you'll be indoors for most of the night, as this could get chilly. Want to win a costume contest? If you're coupled up, have your partner don a housecoat, bad wig and carry a kitchen knife - you'll have your own Norman Bates!

Body suit and leggings - American Apparel (1) (2); for modesty, and to keep warm.

Clear plastic shower curtain - (3) these can be found at Dollarama in Canada for under $2, and should be available at any similar store worldwide in the home section. Wrap it around your body as you would a towel, then secure with safety pins at the side.

Blonde wig - (4) (5) any blonde wig will do, as it can be trimmed for the short style that Janet wore in the film. To get the "fresh-out-of-the-shower" look, comb hair gel thoroughly through the wig.

Fake blood - (6) Use vigorously.

Plus - apply mascara and eyeliner as usual, then using a cotton ball covered in a bit of make-up remover, streak down your cheeks for a smeared look.

3. Lady Godiva

Best for those with a bit of confidence, or at least someone who lives somewhere warm.

Same as the Janet Leigh costume: body suit and leggings - American Apparel (1) (2); for modesty, and to keep warm.

Long curly wig (3), or if you've already got long hair, curl it and add ...

Flower hair accessories (4)

Final steps - knee high suede boots, Godiva chocolates for trick-or-treaters (or yourself), and a horse pendant necklace (for those of us who don't have access to a steed for the night)

4. Vincent Van Gogh

For artsy or morose types. Bonus: you can wear layers and stay cozy.

What you'll need: A heavy wool coat, a corn-cob pipe, medical gauze from the drugstore or a first aid kit (to wrap around your ear, add fake blood), a men's hat, comfortable trousers, menswear style shoes, and a handful of paintbrushes and sunflowers tied in a bunch. The latter two items can be found at a craft store, like Michaels.

5. Sea Captain

Possibly the easiest costume. This is for those of us who are really lazy.

What you'll need: A peacoat, preferably in red or navy, a striped shirt or turtleneck, cropped trousers, boat shoes, and a net or bag (the striped tote is from Etsy) full o' fake fish and lobster. A corncob pipe or captain's hat are a nice touch, as well.

I've been daydreaming

A lag in posts, how typical of me! I have an excuse though. I had my wisdom teeth out on Friday, and prior to that, I'd been busy with pursuing things in my career-path-of-choice. How vague, I know. I just don't like talking about things until they're set in stone!

Anyway, the ol' teeth. The surgery itself was a breeze, seeing as I remember none of it. They took me in, put me in a chair, hooked me up to an IV that they said was saline, but I don't remember anything after that, other than them saying I had beautiful veins and should donate blood (fat chance). I woke up in another room, in a bed, feeling very cold and thinking how weird it was that someone probably had to carry me in there. I wasn't too wonky or woozy and haven't had any odd painkiller experiences. My sockets have been swollen and driving me crazy, and I'm hungry for food with substance and texture, but otherwise I'm doing fine, I guess. Pudding and whipped cream are the highlight of it all!

I've been bedridden mostly and have had plenty of time to daydream about things. While my thoughts are mostly occupied of visions of burritos, bento boxes and burgers, I've also had aesthetic images floating about, don't worry. It seems that Never Let Me Go influenced me more than just emotionally. The outfits worn by Keira, Carey, and Andrew have seeped into my brain and have got me craving the chunkiest, warmest sweaters around and Wellies, o'course. I've been craving the English countryside (despite having never been there), so images of what I can recall closely, Nova Scotia's Cabot Trail, are coming to mind. Nova Scotia is, after all, another term for "New Scotland", and the tiny fishing villages of the trail, the long beach grasses and giant cliffs, remind me of what England's coast is probably like.

So I'm really now just dying to be along the Atlantic, with a small little cottage and some baby pygmy goats, teaching myself to knit and drinking far too much tea. It's been ages since I've been in Nova Scotia 'round this time of year, and while to some the bitter, wet, and foggy weather is miserable, it's comforting to me.

All of this has culminated into an obsession with the DRAB. Everything in olive, khaki and moss tones, please! And thick, sturdy materials. Suede, corduroy, wool, tweed, and velvet. I've wanted velvet shorts for over a year now, which is odd since I detest the fabric. But I could handle some velvet shorts, I think. Everywhere I look though, they're upwards of $50. So I'm thinking perhaps I need to sew some myself.

I do realize this post is a bit rambling and difficult to follow, and I'm going to take a minute to apologize and also blame the codeine in my post-surgery painkillers. It's been responsible for some really odd trains of thought lately, not to mention a complete destruction of my short-term memory for the time being.

I keep popping in and out of my web tabs, bopping between the Zara site and Design*Sponge's excellent "Living In" feature, which partially inspired this post ... and well, what am I getting at? I'm not sure. Basically, this post ... this is an introduction to what I'm feeling for Fall and Winter. There will be more to come, I'm sure. But for the time being, here we are.

I'll finish this off by asking, what are your inspirations for getting dressed this season? Movies, particular places you've traveled, animals, songs? Ideas can come from anywhere, especially when your head is off in such sleepy places!

So, I'm looking to buy myself a pair of the classic Hunter Wellington boots and I'm stumped on the colour. Yes, this is quite a self-serving post but I'd like the insight of others to help me decide on this very trying matter.

Green or black, folks. Green or black?

Yes, black is versatile and "goes with anything". But I feel like when I think "Wellies", I think of the green. It's classic. And it's a drab enough shade that it could be a neutral. I really am quite puzzled about this. I won't be ordering them for a few more weeks, but I feel the more time I mull over this, the harder the decision will be.

Oh, and buying both is not really a financial option.

Birthday Broad

Okay, so I really do want to keep with the consistent updates, but my birthday was last week, followed by a full week of work, and now it's Thanksgiving weekend here in Canada so I've been a teensy bit overwhelmed.

My birthday was the 30th, and it was pretty swell. I went to Toronto and started off the day by treating myself to a manicure and some iced tea from David's Tea. I also went to Indigo and splurged on magazines, which is something I haven't done in awhile so it was a nice gift to myself. I bought the Carey Mulligan Vogue, the Marion Cotillard Vogue Paris, the Emma Stone Nylon, and the Naomi Campbell Interview. Lots of eye candy. I still haven't read through them all. "Read" I use lightly, since I do not understand French fluently, so the Paris Vogue is mostly for "the pretty."

I also managed to pick up the brown version of the shoes in my last post. You know, if you love something, you should get it in various colours. Especially if it's on sale.

After that I headed to Lush, seeing as they've launched so many new products in the last few months. I picked up the Fizzbanger bath bomb, which smells just like warm apple cider and is perfect for a Fall bath, along with their Full of Grace skin serum bar (which, when combined with the Catastrophe Cosmetic mask, made my skin outrageously smooth and glowy), and the Silk Stockings leg tint.

My sister bought me a gigantic bottle of Dr. Bronner's Rose soap, which I love, along with some Senchamental tea from David's Tea, clove and jasmine incense, J.R. Watkins lip balm, and a bottle of agave nectar. I'm spoiled!

That night I met up with friends at this incredible tapas restaurant, Mezzetta. The food was absolutely ridiculous - in the best sense. Really affordable and so much variety. I had tabouli, these little cheese puff pastries, a goat cheese salad with olives and pickled veggies, Persian rice with raisins, and fried eggplant. The creamed cauliflower is also amazing. If you're in Toronto, I can't recommend it enough.

When I got to the restaurant I was greeted by a bouquet of flowers that my fella had had sent there for me since he couldn't be there. It was such a thoughtful thing and I was really happy. And they were Gerbera daisies, which I love.

I wore a vintage wiggle dress from Little Things Vintage. It was a splurge I'd treated myself to a few months ago and I am so thrilled with it. It fits like a glove and the details are so flattering. I really like to show off my back and collarbone and this dress does just that.

After dinner, my hair had lost some of it's volume.

All and all, it was a pretty great way to turn 21. I really love the Fall, you know, one good thing after another. Like I mentioned, it's Thanksgiving weekend here. That means too much food to handle tomorrow, which I couldn't be happier about.

But that's a post for another day. I've got a pie to bake.

It's been ages, hasn't it? Well, time for a proper blog update. This'll be a long, long doozy.

I guess I should start with what I've been up to the last few weeks. Well, in August I dyed my hair red. It was sort of an out-of-the-blue idea, and now I'm quite enjoying being a faux-ginger so I think it's going to stay that way for awhile.

Fake-gingy McGee!

TIFF (the Toronto International Film Festival) came to Toronto in early September. I'd always been in the city during the festival, but never bothered to go to any screenings, which is silly because movies are essentially my life. I decided with my limited budget that I'd see the film adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's novel Never Let Me Go.

I hadn't read the book though, and things were getting down to the wire. I'm kind of adamant in reading the book first when it comes to film adaptations. Yes, usually the book is better, but after seeing so many adaptations over the years, you start to realize how difficult it can be to capture a novel within the short screen-time a film limits you to, and you grow an appreciation for what filmmakers are able to do with the material they're given.

A few days before the screening, I rushed to the bookstore and picked up a copy of the book, and devoured it in time for the screening, finishing it the night before. The screening was early the next morning, and I foolishly stayed out late that night, exhausting myself and without even realizing it, my emotional state.

I met up with my friend Jakk and her friend Carmel early in the morning with some Sprite and Rolaids to settle my sleep-deprived tummy, and we waited in the veerry looooong line to see the film. When it finally started, I was so tense and shaky and nervous. Many factors probably: I was exhausted, I had the book fresh in my mind and was sitting there critically waiting for pivotal moments to materialize before me. After awhile I just let the book's material slide to the side and I focused on the performances.

Carey Mulligan and Andrew Garfield were ridiculous, and I mean this in the most complimentary way. The way they portrayed their characters, Kathy and Tommy, respectively, was really incredible. They captured the naivete and childlike frustration, awe, and sadness of the book so perfectly and made it so human. I don't want to go into the plot too much, not that I feel it would give it all away, but I just really feel like everyone should see this movie with blind eyes. Even if you've read the book, it's a separate experience. They (the book, and the film) really make wonderful companions for each other. Yes, the plotline was tweaked and changed and certain moments were dramatically different or altogether left out. But Ishiguro himself was apart of the film's process so I think it did the book justice but also worked as its own entity.

When the final lines of narration were spoken and the credits started rolling, I lost it. I wasn't expecting to be such a mess, but I was really hanging by a thread, super-tired and overwhelmed by everything I'd just taken in. I started bawling and mumbling, "it's so sad! It's so sad!" It was really embarrassing. The middle-aged woman sitting behind me grabbed my shoulders and said, "don't worry, it's just a movie!"

Gosh, if only I could see it that way!

Needless to say, I'm still wrecked 2 weeks later. Mark Romanek, the director, has a habit of doing this to me. I felt similarly when I saw his first film, One Hour Photo. I wish he'd make something uplifting, ha!

In other news, my birthday is tomorrow. At first I was feeling pretty blue about it. I'm turning 21, and it feels like, "okay, I'm in my 20s now, I should really buckle down and start being productive." And I haven't done that. At all. I have grand ideas for my future but no way of getting to them. Anyway, enough of being philosophical for now, this post is already an emotional rollercoaster.

So I was worried about what to do, but I realized, to heck with it. I'm gonna celebrate. So tomorrow is a day entirely for myself. I'm going to get a manicure, shop, drink too much tea and try to forget entirely about the fact that I am another year older and at essentially the same place I was a year ago.

As far as a wishlist is concerned, I couldn't really think of anything.

I got these shoes as a gift from my mom. I mean, I go shopping and there are heaps of things I see and like, but I'm starting to get really picky I think. I don't even know. I'm sure I'll find lots of things tomorrow to buy and enjoy, but I don't have anything too specific on my mind.

My parents took me for dinner last night which was quite a gift enough, considering food is one of my foremost passions in life, really really. I ate until I felt like vomiting and that is really one of the greatest feelings, isn't it?

Oh dessert, you are my life.

Ah well, I'm off to the city for an indeterminable amount of time. Going to see some friends, new and old, and have a hopefully lovely time. I hope you all have a good weekend.

So, I don't know if any of you knew, but the reason for the lack of updates was because I couldn't access Blogger on this computer for who knows what reason.

Well, I've somehow found a way around it and now it works.

But here's the big question - do I want to stick with Blogger and do a little revamp, or do I want to start over elsewhere?

Pros of staying would be - it's convenient, I've been here forever, my archives are here.

Cons - I want to re-organize my tags and everything which would take a long time, I want a fresh start.

Gee, I don't know.

So there are about a million reasons why I've neglected this here blog. I've been working like a dog, for one, so I can save money for school in the Fall. I'm headed to "the Big Apple" (I never actually call it that)
for awhile to study acting. Earlier this year, I'd been accepted to an art school in Toronto, but one sign after the other made me realize I just wasn't as passionate about it as I had been a few years ago.
The acting thing is gonna cost a lot of money, so I've been trying really hard to scrimp in save (this is difficult for me, I have a need to buy books all the time ... it's an addiction!) but I think I'm gonna make it.

I've also been preoccupied in the romance department. Not too many details there, I'm a private lady, but it's a wonderful thing and I am grateful to have a fellow in my life.

Aside from those two big things, I've been so exhausted. If I do get online, I spend most of that time playing silly games on Facebook, or updating my tumblr.

And over the last few days, Google Reader, Gmail and Blogger have all crapped out on the "good computer", so I've been lazy about getting around to this one ... yadda yadda yadda, excuses, I know.

Well, here's a pledge to thee, faithful readers. I will try and keep you updated over the next while. There are preparations left for NYC and exciting things to come once I'm there, and I'd love to document all of the fun here.
I still have a couple things from the last few months to drop here too, so you can look forward to belated goodies.

I've Been Galliano'd

So I'm extremely obsessed with John Galliano's F/W 2009 collection. The models looked like little 1920s Russian dolls in gauzy frocks, clutching rosaries and floating around like creepy angels. It's pretty dreamy and I've been fawning over the make-up for months now. Since I was recently given Maybelline's Eyestudio Collection to play around with, I decided I'd go all out and recreate the make-up look from the show, specifically the one worn by Jessica Stam [below].

So, if you like how I interpreted the look [above] read on so you can do it yourself. I think it'd look pretty awesome at some sort of theme party ... who knows?

For the eyes, I used products exclusively from Maybelline's Eyestudio Collection. XXL Pro Mascara in "Extensions", Quad Eyeshadow Palettes in Sunset Seduction and Give Me Gold, Gel Eyeliner in Brown and Colour Pearls in Sinful Sinnamon and Mocha Mirage.

Other products used were Dior's lip pencil in Holiday Red, Joe Fresh lipstick in Berry, Kiehl's Lip Balm, Clinique Blush Stick in Berry on Time and Revlon Powder Blush in Tender Plum.

I started off with my regular foundation, blending it with a cream highlighter (like Benefit's High Beam). I focused the highlighter especially on the bridge and tip of my nose. I used the Revlon blush to contour my cheekbones and the Clinique blush on the apples of my cheeks.

Then I used the lightest shade from the Give Me Gold palette all over my upper eyelid, and underneath extending all the way down to the top of my cheek.

I began to shade the contours of my eyes and exaggerating them with the brown shade from Mocha Mirage. I focused especially on the lower eyelid (almost make it look like you have puffy bags under your eyes ... most people try to conceal them but this make-up look is very exaggerated.) Also work in the crease, towards the bridge of the nose, and out towards the browbone.

Then, take the darkest shade from Sunset Seduction and keep working where the darker shadow was, continuing to darken and contour your eyes.

Using the yellow gold shade from Give Me Gold, first dip a small brush in a clear lip balm, and then apply the gold shadow to the inner corners of your eyes. The lip balm will make the shadow appear more pigmented and almost liquid-like.

Using the gel eyeliner, line your upper lids and darken the previously darkened areas even further, especially the tear ducts, outside of where you applied the gold shadow.

Using only the "Step 1" of the mascara, apply the white primer to upper and lower lashes for a snow queen look.

With the yellow gold shadow and lip balm from before, draw a V in your cupid's bow. Then, using the lip pencil, trace a heart shape onto your mouth and fill with the berry lipstick. Top with the balm.

You're done!

I ended up teasing my hair and adding a feather clip from H&M for an airy-fairy kind of look. Have fun with this, I think it's a really pretty look that will definitely stand out.

So I was recently given the opportunity to try out all of the products from Maybelline's new EyeStudio line, and I've been having a ball. There are about 80 eyeshadows ... I'm not exaggerating, plus 4 gel eyeliners and 4 mascaras. So yeah, it's been a fun time. I also get a LOT of requests in my formspring inbox to make tutorials on how I do my make-up. I finally had some time today and thought, why not. I wanted to do something interesting though, so I did a bold, 1960s inspired eye. Modelled after the looks of Peggy Moffitt and Edie Sedgwick, it's not exactly day-appropriate but fun for a night out. The video is below, along with a cool photo-collage I found on Tumblr of Miss Moffitt getting her eyes done.

Home from NYC

So, I'm home from New York City. Hello. I'm still not unpacked, but other than that, I'm getting back into the swing of normalcy and banality that is part-time work. Oh well, hopefully I'll be back in NYC for a few months starting this September. Fingers crossed, please and thank you.

Here are some photos and brief summaries, so you can live vicariously through me, I guess. I'd suggest actually just going to New York though ...

Stuff I wore:

This was the first day of the trip. The weather was beautiful! Is it just me, or do knees never, ever look attractive?

I have no idea what shoes I wore with this ... oh wait, a pair of wedges from Payless that ended up breaking that night. The day after I bought them. Cool!

We went to Williamsburg on this day. First we went to this Thai restaurant, Sea. I've been there a few times before and it's been hit and miss. I was expecting a good meal. Our drinks came, appetizers came, everything was good.

Then our entrées came. They brought my friend Leah chicken, even though she ordered tofu. My pad Thai had way too much peanut sauce and .... THERE WAS A COCKROACH CRAWLING ON THE WALL. JUST HANGING OUT. Oh, ok. That's totally what I want to see when I'm eating. Yeah, I get it, we're in New York. There are cockroaches everywhere. But I don't want to see that when I'm trying to consume food. I started having a panic attack because bugs freak me out, we all started to feel nauseous, and we flagged down the waiter and voiced our various issues. The management's solution was to offer us free dessert, which is totally acceptable since we wanted to continue to sit there and watch Mr. Cockroach stare at us ... NOT. We continued to complain, saying we weren't going to pay full-price for such a horrible experience. I mean, when you go out to eat, it should be relaxing. Am I wrong in thinking that? I understand one mistake, maybe two, but there were so many factors that made it bad. And the waiter was so rude. He actually said, "well, the cockroach wasn't on the table." As if that made it any better.

Maybe I'm just being whiney, but I feel like that place gets worse every time I eat there and I am definitely not going back again.

We ended up only paying for the drinks and appetizers, which I think was too much. But oh well. What can you do? Leave and go to a flea market ... which we did!

Artists and Fleas on North 6th to be exact. Check this place out, I adore it. Vintage and independent booths set up full of amazing goods for everyone, open every weekend. I got a vegan peanut butter brownie and some jewelry and charms from Brooklyn Charm, who have a full-time store open 7 days a week at 145 Bedford Ave.

We headed to the flagship shop also, and I had the Libra necklace below custom made. The skull necklace I had made at the market, but they had the supplies for it at the store too. I love my Libra necklace. Maybe I'm dippy, but the more I read about the Libra sign, the more I realize it applies to me so exactly. I want to get my charts made, maybe.

Second-last day in NYC. I love this skirt! It's my favourite colour. I picked it up at Buffalo Exchange. That place is nuts. Second-hand designer stuff falling all over the place for cheapy cheap. There was a Marc Jacobs silk top I wanted so badly but it wouldn't fit over my ribcage ... and there isn't much I can do about that.

Stuff I ate and drank:

I love food. I love taking pictures of food. That's actually how this blog started. I love Boylan's soda. Yay.

We ate at the Park Slope restaurant 'Snice a few times. They have amazing options for vegans and vegetarians. I got the smoked tempeh wrap, or maybe it was seitan? I totally forget. But it was delicious.

I had a religious moment in Chipotle. Okay, not really. Well, sort of. First of all, burrito. Second of all, Jonathan Richman's name was next to Leonard Cohen's name on my burrito wrapper. Oh, and my sister saw Haley Joel Osment outside. I didn't though. I wasn't wearing my glasses.

This frozen yogurt place was next to or near Buffalo Exchange. I got coconut fro-yo with maple syrup. It was great. End of story.

More 'Snice. This panini was delicious, but the blue cheese was really overpowering so I ended up switching sandwiches with my sister. But I would still recommend 'Snice. You know why? Because the staff are friendly and there are no cockroaches on the walls!

No trip to Bleecker St. is complete without visiting the Marc Jacobs store and its delicious smelling neighbour, Magnolia Bakery. Some people seem to think Magnolia is for tourists, or it's too cliche. Well to those people I say, "SUCK IT." Who's going to turn down a delicious cupcake and a glass of milk? Not me. And the cupcakes turn into magic when you put them in the fridge for a few hours. Amazing. AMAZING.

Also, a girl in Magnolia asked me if I had a blog. She'd been reading it, as in this blog, the night before. So strange, so surreal. So lady from Magnolia, if you are reading this, hello! Thanks for saying hi.

A little further down Bleecker I visited Grom, a gelato shop, as I'd heard some good stuff about it. Yeah, it was good. It wasn't amazing though, compared to other gelato I've eaten. And it was priced outrageously. That cup was so, so tiny. And it was almost 6 dollars. C'moffit.

Other stuff:

Time Square. Whatevz.

Rambo. I stayed with this kitty and his fluffy brother, Pablo. Oh, and their owner, one of my best, oldest pals, Leah. Basically, all time spent at the apartment was an adorable fun-fest full of allergies!

This is the frozen yogurt shop from above. It looks neat. I imagine Jack White would look good standing inside.

Here I am not wanting to go home.

Well, that's about it. I had a good time and bought some great stuff. I'll make a post soon enough detailing the goods that I picked up, as they should be seen and glorified and ooh'd and ahh'd over. As for now, I'm working all weekend like a sucker to save money for my brilliant future.

Hey everyone. So, I'm in New York City. I guess I forget to let you all know. I'm headed home on Monday night, and I've been here since Wednesday morning. I've done lots of shopping, eaten lots of good food, and overall had a pretty good time (there were a few yucky moments here and there, but that's how life goes though ...)

I'll have lots of photos to show off once I'm at home and organized (luggage everywhere right now). I also bought my first Lomographic camera, the Diana Mini, at the Fred Flare store on Meserole. I'm really excited to see how the photos turn out.

How are you all doing? And to everyone who's been in NYC this past week, how beautiful has the weather been? I'm in love with the sunny Spring time.

Well, I'm getting sleepy. I'm going to finish off these Arrested Development DVDs and then head to bed. Hitting up Marc Jacobs tomorrow, should be a good time.

Hello, hello. Yes. I'm finally updating this old thing. I have a few minutes to myself and I thought I'd come around and yammer on about some things.

The other night I watched 1927's "It" starring Clara Bow, followed by the documentary "Clara Bow: Discovering the 'It' Girl". Next to the 1960s, the 1920s are for me, the highest point for fashion and beauty. And they definitely intertwine at times ... especially when you look at Biba ... but that's a discussion for another day. Basically, the two films I watched were absolute eye candy, and learning about Miss Bow was so interesting. I didn't know much about her beforehand, other than that she was the quintessential flapper girl of film, and she was painfully gorgeous. Her real story of breaking into the world of silents, and later on, "talkies", is both inspiring and tragic. If you'd like to brush up on some film history and see a gorgeous girl rise (and sadly, fall), check out the doc, narrated by Courtney Love.

On a slightly visually-related note, here are some photos from Galliano's F/W 2009 runway show. The make-up has an ethereal angel meets silent screen starlet feel and I've been obsessing over it for months now. When I finally get the time, I'm going to put together a video tutorial on how to get the look. Obviously, it's not a day-to-day going to work look, but I think it could look really nice for a night on the town, don't you?

Oh man. Hautelook is having a Taschen sale. My heart is skipping beats. I just bought a ton of beautiful books for outrageously cheap prices. While I would have LOVED to have bought the entire Domus collection, $305 is out of my budget (but still what a deal! Someday, someday ...)

Books are as cheap as $6.50!!! Yes, I need to use that many exclamation points!

Seeing as I'm a single gal this Valentine's Day, it might seem the norm to some to be a bitter lass, but I'm not headed that route. Happily alone, I'll be spending my Valentine's Day pining after boys I'm completely aware I'll never have ... that is unless I were a time traveler.

An Ode to Viktor & Rolf

It's 3:30 in the morning as I type this. I find I have my best creative bouts in the wee hours of the night, but that might be my sleep-deprived brain talking tall tales. Regardless, I've decided to write a bit of a love story tonight. No, I haven't met anyone. In fact, this love affair's been around for awhile. Since 2006 ... maybe 2005 ... memory fails me on these things. This love comes to mind often. When I'm talking with other fashionable folks, and they ask, "what designers are your favourite?" this love of mine just bubbles up and spills over. And when I'm alone too, on nights like this one, I lie awake and think of this love, and it fills me with hopeless insomnia.

Yes, I'm in love with Viktor & Rolf. You're probably thinking this sounds awfully frivolous, seeing as how most humans fall in love with other humans. But you need only go as far as reading the name of this blog, an Aesthetic Feast, to know I'm an aesthetics-minded girl (not "shallow", as some may think).

My first encounter with Viktor & Rolf, the clothing line created by Dutch fellows Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren, was love at first sight. But I can't really pinpoint when that first time was. I'm thinking it was their Fall 2005 collection, maybe I'd spotted it in a magazine. Tori Amos sat in front of a piano on the runway, in a fuchsia pajama set, and played as the models walked, decked out in "sleepwear". That is, they had pillows behind their heads, their crimped hair splayed out over the cotton, or their dresses were made to look like embroidered duvets. "Dreamy" is an appropriate word to describe it. With that, they captured my attention.

Soon followed their beautifully feminine collaboration with H&M, which of course sold out instantly and I never had a chance with it. Love can be so cruel sometimes.

I was lovestruck at this point and followed them from collection to collection. My fate was sealed with Spring 2007; the crystal leggings and the faceted shoes haunted me in my sleep. They still do. Where can one even get a pair of those leggings? I need them. Am I going to have to make a pair? I think so. Those crystal platforms, like walking on chandeliers, were so completely glamorous. Can you think of anything more decadent than covering your flesh with diamonds? That's the feel this collection had.

Shooting stars covering nude and black tuxedos, beaded floor-length column gowns that felt so very 1930's Silver Screen. As with all of their collections, there was that hint of androgyny. One ensemble you could easily see on Fred Astaire, the next dress would look perfect on Ginger Rogers. And there was always an element of theatricality. Ballroom dancers swayed while Rufus Wainwright performed. Again, "dreamy". Crystal collars, chandelier shoes. The fragility of faceted glass with the masculinity of a bowtie. Fred and Ginger rolled into one.

Before that, there was Fall 2006. "Dramatic" to say the least. Braided hair masks, mimicking the fishnet print of the models' stockings, covered their faces. But the masquerade didn't detract at all from the clothing. Feeling very Dior "New Look" --cinched waists and full skirts, meets prima ballerina-- my heart was won. The gray wool skirt suits, the ruffled satin blouses. They were so very late 1950s, prim and proper, yet their was something darker about it. Maybe it was the masks, but this was a sinister kind of ladylike, a woman who might carry arsenic in her patent leather pocketbook.

Oh, Spring 2008. Any shred of darkness from Fall 2006 was washed away by you. Pristine white minidresses, blushing pink cheeks and wavy hair. It vaguely reminded me of the porcelain clown dolls I used to collect when I was little, their ruffled Pierrot collars and harlequin prints (reflected in the printed heels of the shoes this time). This was a very sweet, nostalgic collection. The models even wrote violins around their necks, perhaps for playing love songs. Be still my heart.

These are just a few memories though, a couple of instances when I absolutely knew I was in love with Viktor and Rolf. The list could go on and on as I click through the backlogs at style.com. V&R are something special. Not many people in the creative world can balance versatility with consistency, and yet they do it so well. There is a specific aesthetic with Viktor and Rolf, and yet they always bring out something new.
As someone who tries to work creatively, that is truly an inspiration.

And they aren't just a fashion label, merely out there to clothe the wealthy masses. Viktor and Rolf are storytellers. You might not look at the show and immediately think "oh, I'd wear that out on the street," but you can look at it and get an idea. An inkling of inspiration comes into your head that makes you get excited to get dressed. To me, that's what fashion is about. It's for filling your head with dreams, making you believe that you're the star of your own fairytale, your own glamorous Hollywood musical.

It's 4 a.m. now, and I think it's time I wrap this up. I hope you enjoyed this love story, that it inspires you in some way. I'm off to sleep, and maybe (quite likely), dream.

Thrifting Adventures

I used to work at a thrift store. For a year of my life actually. It was pretty enjoyable, for the most part. I got first look at everything that came in, and I had a 50% discount. Though, once I quit, I wasn't in that part of town often and didn't get around to thrifting much. Which is sad, because a huge percentage of my wardrobe is vintage and I find something so enjoyable in treasure hunting for a special or strange thrift-store find. Well, after killing myself for awhile at the gym tonight, I decided to head out thrifting. And boy did I score!

Here are a few of the pieces I got. There was also a sweater, a dress, and a scarf but I'll save those for another time. Basically, tonight was a reminder that I need to get back in to the groove of thrifting. Maybe not as much before, seeing as I'd shop second hand 3-5 times a week ... but you know, at least once a month.

On to the goods!

I'm loving these kooky pieces. While I was on the fitting room, talking to myself as I so often do (...) I decided that another thing to add to my list of Spring inspiration is the idea of a fortune teller following Jimi Hendrix around at Woodstock ... it's the paisley in my brain.

Formspring and Spring Alike

So the last few days I've been under the weather. I've been lying in bed in my pajamas, attempting to get some reading done, listening to the same three records on repeat, and stinking up my room with jasmine incense. I figured I'd do something productive though, so alas, here is a blog update.

In my last post I mentioned that I'd joined Formspring. I've been really surprised with the amount of questions I've gotten and I've been trying my best to answer them all. Here are a select few. If you want to read the rest or ask me a question, you can check out my profile here.

What are your top 3 favourite perfumes?

Dior's Pure Poison in the Spring/Summer, Chanel Coco Mademoiselle in the Winter, and I like Marc Jacob's Basil for everyday.

Do you think you could do a tutorial for your blog of how you cut your hair yourself?
I could try! The haircut I have right now though is just 3-4 years of my hair growing out from a pixie cut with the occasional trim to the ends and bangs. But I'll see what I can do. I've been cutting my own hair since I was 12 but surprisingly never put much thought into the process ...

You said you don't really "do" anything to your hair other than straighten your bangs, but what kind of products (Shampoo, Conditioner, Hairspray, Gel, Heat Protectant, Gloss, etc.) do you use?
I rotate my shampoos/conditioner. I like Kiehl's Amino Acid line, Redken's All Soft, and Lush's solid shampoos like Squeaky Green and Godiva. Occasionally I'll use the Alberto v05 hot oil treatment for frizzy hair as an added treat.

I spray Philip B.'s apple cider vinegar detangler in my hair when it's wet because it gets ridiculously tangled and I find this stuff gets out any leftover conditioner I may have missed. Redken has a few smoothing creams I like that I'll use before blow-drying if I have to go somewhere but most of the time I just let my hair air dry while I'm sleeping!
And for updos and what not L'Oreal's Ellnett hairspray is what I'll use.Oh and Batiste Dry Shampoo when I'm too lazy to wash my hair!

Your skin is gorgeous! What kind of cleanser/moisturizer/treatments do you use?
Thank you! Too sweet. I try to keep it as natural and gentle as possible when it comes to my skin. I spent years trying a million different products and regimes that were so strong and full of chemicals and when I went gentle, my (very dry, very sensitive) skin finally behaved.

At night I usually use Lush's Ultra Bland cleanser, which takes off all my make-up and really gets into my pores. It's super greasy so I wouldn't recommend it for people with oily skin.Then I take that off with a cotton ball and Lush's Eau Roma toner which is lavender and rose water.

I like Estee Lauder's Advanced Night Repair after that. It's a splurge but it's great for evening out your skin tone and making everything look a lot nicer when you wake up.

After that I'll moisturize with Kiehl's Ultra Facial Moisturizer. It's one of the few creams that actually makes my skin feel moisturized.

That's about it. If I'm too tired for all of that (it happens) I'll use a sensitive skin unscented baby wipe to take everything off. They're probably the best things you can use because they're so gentle and going to bed with make-up on is never a good idea.

And lastly I always always always wear sunscreen. At least spf 30 everyday. EVERYDAY. I don't want skin cancer or wrinkles. I am proud to be pale!

So, the best advice I can offer is be gentle, and really take care of your skin. It's worth splurging on. It's the one thing you can never take off, and you have it for your entire life!

"Just wanted to know what spring trends in fashion you think you are going to embrace this year?"

... and it got me thinking. I don't really follow trends. I know what I like to wear in certain seasons and I do look to what's going on in fashion for ideas but I definitely don't let it dictate what I wear. However, there are looks and ideas I'm thinking about for those warmer months so I put together a little inspiration board to give you guys an idea.

In short, I'm digging the breezy nautical thing combined with effortlessly glamorous slapdash hippie girls. The band-aids of Almost Famous meets Anna Karina in Pierrot le Fou. Dreamy-eyed in light fabrics. Seersucker and braided leather belts with short white shorts, gauzy blouses, braided hair, lots of gold jewelry, freckled noses, smelling like incense and pure perfume oils, being barefoot whenever possible ... I think you catch my drift. The first bit of Spring brings out a more carefree side in everyone and I like seeing that reflected in whatever I wear.

What are your plans for Spring dressing? I know I'm getting sick of Winter. Lacy sheer blouses and crop tops for me now, please. Maybe it's the records I've been listening to ...
